How did Glamping come about?

Before we try to discover glamping, do you know what this word means? The term, coined in England in 2005, derives from the combination of “glamour” and “camping” and for years has been one of the most popular trends among lovers of the unusual: a camping holiday inside elegant tents or eco-friendly masterpieces.

It is a neologism, but the concept is of very ancient origin. The first evidence dates back to 1100, by Mongolian tribes who lived in yurts equipped with every comfort. Even during the Ottoman Empire it was customary to pitch luxurious tents during military expeditions. While, in the early 1900s during Safaris in Africa, the wealthiest explorers stayed in fine tents outfitted with carpets and antique furniture. Across the ocean, on the other hand, American Indians used the famous tepee tents, still popular today with those who wish to experience wilder glamping in unexplored lands.

These traditional accommodations, fascinating and evocative, have inspired today’s glamping facilities.
