Venice Biennale 2024: tickets, pavilions and events

Also this year the beating heart of charming Venice is getting ready to host one of the most awaited events.

From Saturday 20th April 2024 to Sunday 24th November 2024, art and history will meet in a unique setting: the Venice Biennale. Once again, the Venetian Giardini and the Arsenale will be the backdrop for one of the world’s most important cultural events.

We suggest to all the guests of our campsite to spend at least one day experiencing this extraordinary and unforgettable event and not to miss the enchanting atmosphere of the Biennale.

What is the Venice Biennale?

The Venice Biennale is a world-famous international cultural event held every year in Venice.

Born in 1895 from an idea of Riccardo Selvatico, the Venetian mayor of the time, the Biennale hosts – depending on the year – exhibitions of contemporary art, architecture, dance, music, theatre and cinema, and attracts artists, critics and fans from all over the world. Over the years, the Biennale has welcomed some of the most famous artists of the last centuries, including Picasso, Dali, Pollock, Fontana, Abramović and many others.

Today, 129 years after the first edition, the Biennale is one of the most important cultural events in the world.

The 60th International Art Exhibition: “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere”

This year, the Venice Biennale presents the 60th International Art Exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the first Latin American to hold this position since 1895.

The exhibition, titled “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere“, was inspired by some works created by the Claire Fontaine collective, committed since the early 2000s to the fight against racism and xenophobia in Italy. Through these works, represented by neon sculptures of different colours, with the expression “Foreigners Everywhere” written in different languages, the artists of the collective celebrate the inclusion and diversity that mark each of us, everywhere in the world.

“Foreigners Everywhere”, therefore, is not just a title, but a more complex concept that focuses on the meaning of human diversity. Indeed, as Adriano Pedrosa states, the expression has more than one meaning: on the one hand, it emphasises the presence of foreigners everywhere in the world, and on the other, it underlines the sense of foreignness we can feel even in the places we call home.

The exhibition, curated by Pedrosa and accompanied by 90 national participations, takes place between the Central Pavilion (Giardini) and the Arsenale, and is divided into two different sections: the Nucleo Contemporaneo (Contemporary Section) and the Nucleo Storico (Historical Section).

The Nucleo Contemporaneo is dedicated to artists living on the edge of the world and persecuted, not only for their sexual orientation, but also for their free and alternative, out-of-the-box artistic spirit. In this section, the concept of “stranger” is linked to the etymological roots of different languages, evoking concepts of foreignness and strangeness, but also of familiarity. All this refers to psychological theories such as Freud’s “Das Unheimliche”, which argues that the concept of “strange”, is also familiar, within, deep down side. For this reason, the Nucleo Contemporaneo also focuses on the works of other related artists, such as the queer artist, the outsider artist and the indigenous artist, who form the focus of this edition.

Indigenous artists welcome visitors in the Central Pavilion and in the Corderie, where the Maataho collective from Aotearoa/New Zealand presents a large-scale installation in the first room. Queer artists, on the other hand, appear throughout the exhibition and are also the subject of a large section in the Corderie, as well as an area devoted to queer abstraction in the Central Pavilion.

In addition, the Nucleo Contemporaneo will feature a special section in the Corderie devoted to Disobedience Archive, a project by Marco Scotini that since 2005 has been developing a video archive focusing on the relations between artistic practices and activism. This section, divided into two main parts specially conceived for the exhibition, includes works by 39 artists and collectives made between 1975 and 2023.

The Nucleo Storico, on the other hand, gathers works from the 20th century from Latin America, Africa, Asia and Middle East. This section consists of three rooms in the Central Pavilion: the first room, titled “Portraits”, will host works from 112 artists, the second room devoted to “Abstractions”, will include 37 artists, and a third room is devoted to the worldwide Italian artistic diaspora in the 20th century. This room will feature works by 40 artists who are first or second generations Italians.

Venice Biennale: dates and tickets

The Biennale lasts about six months, from April 20th to November 24th. The ticket price is 25 euro and allows one entrance to both exhibition venues, Arsenale and Giardini, which can also be visited on different days. Until March 21st 2024, however, you can enjoy the Early Bird rate for tickets and accreditation.

But that’s not all! Over 65s, under 26s, students and groups can benefit from special discounts to visit this amazing exposition.

Must-see events of the Venice Biennale

The exhibition is enriched by 30 Collateral events, admitted by Adriano Pedrosa and promoted by public and private non-profit organisations. These events take place in several locations around Venice, offering a wide range of contributions that enrich the diversity of voices represented at the event.

Biennale Teatro
