The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a must for lovers of modern and contemporary art. Located in the heart of the lagoon city, on the banks of the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district, this museum allows you to plunge not only into art and history, but also into the timeless beauty of Venice.

Founded by Peggy Guggenheim, the museum opened in 1951 and quickly became an international cultural landmark. The collection offers a unique selection of works ranging from surrealist, cubist and abstract art to futurism and 20th century sculpture. In addition, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions and events that further enrich the cultural offer, attracting visitors from all over the world every year.

Peggy Guggenheim and her collection

Peggy Guggenheim was born in New York in 1898 in a rich and prestigious family. After her father’s death, she moved to Europe in 1921, where she began to plunge into the art world, creating friendships with leading artists and intellectuals of the time, including Samuel Beckett and Marcel Duchamp.

At the age of 39, her passion for art led her to open the first Guggenheim Jeune gallery in London in 1938, marking the beginning of her career as a collector. With determination, she set out to buy “a work a day”, making her life a journey that led her, over time, to own a priceless work of art collection.

After the Second World War, Peggy then decided to move to Venice, where she bought Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal. Here, she turns her house into a museum open to the public, becoming a cultural landmark in the Venetian lagoon and worldwide.

Today, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, managed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, through exhibitions and educational initiatives, continues to be a place where art stimulates dialogue and reflection, keeping Peggy’s innovative spirit alive. Peggy Guggenheim’s heritage, therefore, is not limited to her collection, but extends to the museum’s role as the core of an ever-evolving artistic history, serving as a bridge between past, present and future generations.

In addition, the collection also includes a significant selection of African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian artworks.

And that is not all. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts many temporary exhibitions and events that further enrich the cultural offer, attracting visitors from all over the world and ensuring an always original and avant-garde exhibition offer.
